ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS OF UAW LOCAL 578
The Union has been advised by representatives of Oshkosh Truck that the Company is considering not scheduling certain operations due to a variety of business concerns. The extent of what could occur is not fully known.
The Company has stated several options that it may pursue. Some examples, presented by the Company, were soliciting the plant for volunteers to take time off, laying off employees from certain operations for a full week, or weeks, or on several days. As of today, and based upon continuing to obtain business, permanent layoffs are not a part of their current plan.
While the Union wishes it had veto power over such decisions it does not. It also wishes this would have been communicated in a more timely fashion.
Your Union will continue to do its best to ensure that any action taken by the Company is consistent with the terms and conditions of the Labor Agreement.
The Union is very frustrated by the fact that some management representatives made announcements of their intentions, to employees, before informing the Bargaining Committee on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 17, 2009. On the morning of Wednesday, March 18, 2009, the Company did update the Union before making plant announcements. It is however, Management's responsibility to make formal announcements, of their decisions, to employees.
The Union has expressed its concerns about the high costs associated with the outsourcing of work and has requested work be brought back.
As more information becomes available your Union will do its best to keep you timely informed. Please also visit your Unions website uaw578.org to stay current.
